AdGabber

Let's just get this out of the way. Hire me. Now , there have I broken the rules of this social network? I'm not really sure exactly what this whole thing about pandering oneself is about. I mean, isn't that what advertising is?

There have been several posts here where the poster was called out on the carpet for promoting. One of them was a woman who said there's this cool company that blah, blah, blahs and here's the site to learn more- and then it turned out she worked for them. Would it have been okay for her to come in and say I work for this cool company that blah blah blahs and here's the site?

Was it the omission of the fact she worked for the cool company that made it unokay?

I'm the sort of guy who has an avatar that leads a far more exciting life than I do. I'm still trying to find out exactly what an internet "Friend" is. At one point in my life, a friend was someone who had a truck and would help you move. But I digress.

So then what is okay and not okay to do here with regards to trying to push one's own agenda? If this is a social network, then why don't we play cards or pool here or talk about books and swap recipes? That's all social stuff isn't it.

Most of us here at AdGabbers is in one way or another in advertising and so it's natural that our forums, blogs and general essence would follow suit. I'm just wondering if it's okay for me to replace my pic with the one I have of me holding a sign that says "Will do Creative for Food".

Any other thoughts?

Hey J.S. -

Steve Hall addressed this a month or so ago, probably while you were on one of your many vacations. I’m sure that post is around somewhere - Steve if you’re reading perhaps you could provide a link.

Anyway - there are some common-sense guidelines, all based on good manners. We all have something to sell. But most everyone also has a pretty clear idea of what goes over the line, such as

- Phony personal profiles, or company profiles in place of a real person.
- “Discussions” that are really product announcements or press releases.
- Hot deals on Mary Kay Cosmetics.

I think most all of us like to hear about products and services of interest to us professionally. So don’t’ be shy, tell us more about what you do.

Your friend
Steve McNamara is perfectly right. Common sense is the key. I have a book that I released, yet I didn't post a discussion about it, nor did I post a press release. Instead, I opted to use my page to announce its release and I also sent private messages to people in my friends list, also telling them the book is out now. Again, I'd very much like to get hired somewhere outside Romania, but I'm not going to make a main page discussion about it, but rather just talk to people and see if opportunity for a job arises. Everything we say or do is part of a branding process, whether it may be conscious or involuntary. If you don't know about it, it doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
For what it's worth...I'm selling my ideas every day and being sold ideas every day. It would be so nice to have a place to go where the selling is put on hold. I had hoped AdGabber was going to be that place.
the selling and buying never stops :) wherever you are, whoever you are, whenever. :)
Why not a forum dedicated to job seekers and self promoters(aside from the Jobs section)?

Awwww don't sweat it JS...we're ALL whores from one extent to another...some of us just have better mouth wash, thats all.

And the girl's company in question, wasn't really all that "cool". Its just that she came in with this lame ASS "Hey guys...look what I found"...intro that was absolute bullsh*t...

I mean trust me, for the right job.... I'd wax anyones legs or " stop calling me a wookie" back hair in a heartbeat.

and as me being me...I TRIPLE DOG DARE YOU (thats right dammit!!!!...I jumped straight to the triple, right over 1 & 2) to post an avatar of you holding a sign that reads "Will do Creative for Food"

hell , I'd even take the picture for you...you gonna be in the Destin, Florida area anytime soon?

And lastly...who ordered the (_*_) from room service 3 floors up?
I resemble that remark, Mr. Swafford. A girls got to do what a girls got to do.
Hi JS!

I believe it was me that called the poor girl out on the carpet, but I have a low tolerance for posers. People seem to come here solely to push a product or agenda. My understanding, and by all means Adgabber socialites correct me if I'm wrong, this network is dedicated to the discussion of advertising and media. I happen to agree with Brian, I'm "sold" to every second of the day, and I came here to learn and partake in meaningful discussion. I didn't come here to have every company under the sun push a product. Now, is that different than someone being HONEST and saying HEY, here I am with this experience and what can I do to get HIRED? SURE?!? Especially if you come here and pretend you saw this GREAT product and everybody should check it out, and come to find out you're the freaking sales rep for the company!!! I have a hard time with that. I don't have a hard time with a honest discussion about someone's background, or how they made it in the business or AREN'T making it in the business, or what they can do to change things, etc., but DON'T come here and pretend your something your not so we'll all take a look. Are we all that stupid?
Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and apologies if this has all been covered before. Steve would have you believe that I'm on a perrenial vacation, which is not quite true and despite my constantly being in hire me mode, I manage to get the odd job in. I check in here pretty often and hadn't remembered this getting discussed. At least not to the point where I would have liked it to have been discussed.

As for this whole "using common sense thing", I can start another thread that might be entitled "Why doesn't anyone seem to have common sense?"

Thanks,
j.s.
Did anyone else's {{{{(_*_)}}}} clench up after reading Smitty's reply like mine did?...you'd have sworn I was tying a balloon animal.

Smitty?, you're not a yardstick-wielding Nun are you?

(wink in total agreement...besides, JS is a pretty good guy with a great sense of humor and wisdom.)

Besides I think ALL companies should have their own version of Reverend Jim from "Taxi"
{snicker} - Somehow you always get me in the middle of a chug of something when I'm reading your post and it inevitably ends up out my nose. Come over here with your knuckles kid and I'll wrapp'm with my ruler!! My habit is a bit too tight tonight.

Listen, I'm being honest. JS asked a question and I answered. I'm not condemning him in the least. I just can't stand the a-holes that come here and pretend they just found out about some GREAT new thing and when it boils down to it, they are just self promoting. If someone is here legitimately discussing ways to "get work", then by all means open up the flood gates!

SOOO in the essence of sportsmanship here JS, WHERE do you want to work because I have a pretty great idea that would get you a big foot in the door, wherever you want to go....I'm that creative type. Of course the rest is up to you such as, you'd have to kill in the interview and actually have some semi-decent skills.

Let me know and contact me off the board.

TJ - I'm glad I could send a little shiver on up!! (that was taming it down)
Darling Smit-Tahhhhyyyy...I was so SUPPORTING you...I guess you missed my sarcasm and intentions.

I mean, come on...I called her out on the carpet first<---- (is it just me , or is that one damn sexy sentence?)

*60 second fantasy*

I totally agree with you and applaud the very way you handled it.

And if you are still feeling froggy with the ruler and all?...Bring in on, Joanie Won Kenobi

(Pulls out his own yardstick and assumes the hidden-clam pose)

(then starts taunting you through a vacuum cleaner hose)
