1. Why do the vast majority of the people in these networks end up as lurkers? Most of the people in our network do not actively or consistently participate.

2. Why don’t these networks attract more people from our business? Social networks attract just a minuscule fraction of the entire population of the people working in our industry.

3. Why do only a few people out of the total population have anything to say? We are in the communication business, why don’t we know how to communicate with each other?

4. Why do only a few people out of the total population actively post or comment on other people’s posts or profiles? There are thousands of members, but only a few posts with a few comments.

5. Why do only a few people out of the total population make friends or network in a social network of their peers?

6. Why do only a few people out of the total population stay, while most just stop by for a while, then move on, or rarely check in from time to time?

7. Real life operates one way, and virtual life operates another, why is that? For example, in real life when you say hi to someone, or welcome someone, or make the first move to speak with someone, they will usually respond to you. Not true here. People will often avoid contact in a social network after they have been approached. So why do they come to a social network in the first place?

8. Are most of the people in our business really that boring, or have nothing to say?

9. Are most of the people in our business really that shy or rude?

10. Are most of the people in our business really that unfriendly towards each other, envious of each other, intimidated by each other, not care about each other, or are afraid of each other?

11. Are most of the people in our business really that fucked up?

(Help me out here folks, please. I can’t figure this out??????????)

AdGabber is my partner, coach, career orientator and a guy (cuz personally i see adgabber as a male dressed casual but not too informal, classy but not too elegant, likes art, the movies, and some serious drinks) who I could have some hot partying!
ps. Please send me that guys name or something I WANNA SEE THAT PIC!
As the creator of Adrants, I'll take that as a compliment, Diana:-)
... but in reality you get this Diana. No princes here, sorry. Image and video hosting by TinyPic

One thing I forgot last night. The Media world has no market on self-importance combined with ignorance. I've worked on the branding side of the sports world for twelve years, and it's worse than the ad world by far. Word to the ad-wise though- wearing a pair of art dork glasses really doesn't raise your IQ by 20 points. You just think they do. They were dorky in grade school, dorky in high school, and even dorkier on adults. Find me an crappy ad person, and I'll show you an art dork glasses wearer. You know who you are....
And the movie and music businesses are the worst of all.
1) Americans fear public speaking more than death.
2) Most people are not readers, so they are not speakers, but are infrequent writers.
3) When we walk down the streets of mid town we look down and away. We do not look up and say hello.
4) Most of us are not chameleons. We find it difficult to say things that enable us to connect and relate to other people - because we do not practice talking to other people.
5) Do you know how much better advertising would be if every copywriter and creative director in the industry had to go out and actually speak to or pitch a product to a hundred people a day for two weeks. When they realized how much emotional amperage and enthusiasm had to be put out to connect and relate to others they'd view life and their occupation differently. That's called exposure - and most people don't have a lot of it. It take's a career just to get one lifetime's worth of experience.
6) When you get down to it, most just want to go home and watch TV, or escape some other way.
7) Being 'social' is like listening to jazz - less than 1% of the population participates.
8) Average intelligence. Only 27% of children go to college. Of those, 72% end up living off their parents again within 24 months because they don't have the social, life and judgement skills to succeed on their own. It takes time to gather what you need and assimilate it in a way that you can diseminate to others.
9) Most people learn things. That just means you have it memorized. You have to teach it to someone else. That's when I'll know you'll practice what you preach. That makes the world a better place.
10) Interesting question. Good post.
Good answers.
G'day Buddy, yet again I was walking the dogs on Weston-super-Mare beach (bloody cold!) and, yet again, found myself thinking of you!
How about me posting your original question onto the Brand Republic social networking site here in jolly old England.
I think it would be interesting to discover how the Poms respond...then we could analyze how both groups responded, make our conclusions and sell the results for a bundle of money and retire to the sun, sea etc etc...how about it?
Hi Paul,

I would be interested in what you get - although, for a country where (so my spies tell me) a prominent department store had to revise its policy; instructing staff to now decist from saying 'good morning' (etc) to its customers, because they (the customers) considered all this to be offensive and an imposition - dare we hope for more than a "what's it to you then?" as a response
Buddy I am quiet serious in taking this on...my bet is that the bloody Poms (of which I am one I hasten to add!) will be even less inclined to interact than even the Americans, however I do not wish to embark on such a course until I have your permission to use your original posting...so OK?
Regards
Paul
Paul, sorry for the delay in responding, I've been beating my head up against the wall and got a terrible fucking headache.

It’s an interesting experiment. Go ahead and post it, exactly like I wrote it, so we can get an apples to apples comparison of my same questions asked to a different audience. (BTW--That's exactly what I'm doing here at Adgabber. This post of mine was originally from http://www.adholes.com I am also asking these same questions on several other social networks.)

Once my questions are up and posted send a link to me please.

Then, maybe on a daily basis you could cut and paste the answers you at "Brand Republic social network", and post them here on this post at Adgabber. Then everyone here can monitor this experiment, see the comparisons, analyze them, draw conclusions, and share their thoughts here. MAKE SENSE?

(((Question... why are the English referred to as POMS? There has to be interesting back story there.)))
