Bill Green poses some really good points for discussion on this topic over at Make the Logo Bigger.

He was on my show, The BeanCast, last night to discuss, and the conversation offered some great perspective. Admittedly, none of us who were on the show are minorities, (Hal Goodtree, Duane Forrester and Bill and me) but even so we came to a consensus that racism does indeed exist. It may be passive most of the time, but it's there.

Bill was actually at the initial open meeting that Mehri had and he says it was "eye-opening" to hear about the patterns of discrimination.

What are your thoughts? I know it's uncomfortable and has been discussed to death, but I'm wondering if any of your positions are changing as we live with the subject.

Hehehe
I think MacBook and MacBook Pro users can be geeks - especially if we fix them ourselves instead of paying the Apple store.

And I think art directors are practically geeks by definition. Who else has spent the last 20-plus years learning every possible way to crash a machine - with too many fonts, too many bad fonts, too many memory-hungry apps open – and then bring it back – at 3 am, because the deadline is 8 am?
Nas is a good artist and I definitely wouldn't call him unfortunate. He is one of the most successful rap artists of all time. He was making a statement here about the racism in this country that is the topic of our discussion here. I doubt all or most blacks belong to a culture that includes him, but I would say there is a large number of people that do. I think most black people between the ages of 18-35 would be able to identify Nas. I think a large percentage of America between those ages would be able to Identify Nas. The guy doesn't cater to a majority of any group, but he is definitely influential, and I think that's what TJ is getting at. Does "black" america use the premise of racism for its own benefit? People tend to answer "yes" to that question when they see images like this.
Agreed. He does have a choice. BUT, the undercurrent of racism in this country is so strong that choosing the "right" way is almost an act in futility. Anytime a black celebrity does something moderately wrong it becomes a PR nightmare for black people everywhere. Plaxico Buress (a New York Giants football player) recently shot himself in the leg in a crowded NYC nightclub with his own gun and is now in serious trouble. Unfortunately, Plaxico represents black America. The media simply has to air a story like this and large swaths of America see it and say "Oh, so that's how black people act." I know it is simple minded, but I have witnessed this countless times. Remember that video that TJ posted that you found to be "Jerry Springer on crack"? Well, if white america or latino america or asian america sees that they FREAK OUT. They seriously freak out and they believe that's how ALL black people are. Not everyone, but enough to keep the racist ball rollin'. So, since Nas is painfully aware of this ugly truth about society, why shouldn't he flip it around and use it to his advantage? I'm not saying it's right, I'm saying that the battle is so uphill it's almost vertical.
of course it's good...I ONLY surround myself with the very best.
Like me.
Hey now! This is how ugly rumors get started! ;-) I don't hire black people for the same reason I don't hire white people or any other ethnic group. Much easier to hire freelancers by phone. No benefits to pay and no need to know what color their skin is. The perfect world.
LOL

My fully DOMESTIC workforce is quite happy with the rates I pay.

Bob
I bet you don't pay the taxes involved, do you?
Lot of responses since I was here last. Hard to top them.

(And for the record, I’ll pay Buddy’s taxes. Kinda guy I am.)
Great, Bill! I'm glad you agreed to pay my taxes, and that you put it in writing. My taxes for 2008 will be around $500,000. In what form can I expect that payment, and when?
No.
