Don't believe anything I say.

You can’t blame everyone in the financial industry for the economic meltdown. Sadly, Mr. Madoff and a few like him have damaged the reputation of so many. Fortunes and trust have been lost and people are angry. Today, Munn Rabôt introduces a new campaign for Bessemer Trust. This full-page ad appears in the Wall Street Journal and is intended to put distance between Bessemer–a 100 year-old wealth management company built on the pillars of integrity–and the rest of the financial category. Here I…See More

Do-it-yourself pig advertising

Pork. The other white meat. Remember that campaign? Smart work created by a real ad agency designed to reposition pork as a healthy, low fat and delicious alternative to chicken. And then Swine flu comes along, and manages to destroy the reputation of pigs and Mexico at the same time. Now Mexicans are quite capable of defending themselves but pigs need a champion. So appearing in today’s Wall Street Journal is this ad from America’s pork producers, carrying the headline, ‘Let’s keep pork–and all…See More

He's got some balls.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Hats off to copywriter Lawson Clarke. Recently laid off by Arnold in Boston, Clarke has done for himself what he’s been doing for his clients for 15 years. Bob Garfield of Ad Age gives him 3½ stars for the web site he’s put up to get him employed again. www.malecopywriter.com. Based on the publicity he’s getting for himself there’s a good chance Arnold will want to re-hire him. Lawson, you’re better than that.See More

How to murder a duck. And a brand.

I can think of a few ways, but wringing its neck would provide the most pleasure in putting an end to one of the most sorry gimmicks used in advertising. You’ve probably seen the campaign done for Aflac, the insurance company. And you’ve probably also seen the duck that features prominently in its advertising. The spokesduck with a one-word vocabulary– “Aflack.” Got any idea what the advertising’s about? Evidently you’re not alone. It seems everyone remembers the fucking duck, they just don’t…See More

Vendor.

My lifelong dream has always been to be a successful vendor. There are many respected vendors in our industry including, John Hegarty, Lee Clow, Pat Fallon and Alex Bogusky. Before them there was David Ogilvy and Bill Bernbach. They hawk their wares, open up shop early and rarely run short on supplies. They charge a fair price for their commodities– strategy, creative, media, interactive, etc. Make your selection(s) and take it all home in a brown paper bag.At Munn Rabôt, our most valuable item…See More

I need a drink

At least once a week I send out a plea for new business. Reaching out to brands that I think we can help as well as those that can provide a little relief around here. As opposed to the usual new business bullshit letter, I’m sending this entry to Rogue Ales in Oregon. Why Rogue Ales? Well, these people are completely nuts, so I figure we’re perfect for each other. If you look at their Declaration of Interdependence below it’s uncanny how like us they are. Try this: Replace ‘Rogues’ with ‘Munn…See More
