It's less and less that way now, Gabe. Now what we're finding is a manic attempt to reach the individual.

But advertising aside, it's always scarier to direct your message to one person than it is to address a general audience. One risks divulging too much and losing more.

It is too easy to market to ideals, too difficult to market to specific people. Advertising would much rather deal with abstracts - "males 18-24" - than with specifics. Why is advertising so afraid to get down and dirty and intimate?
