Now you're talking. Or maybe we should just start pitching him to our clients as if he already worked at our agencies.
Which way? ;-)

I'm a branding consultant to the financial-services, technology and b2b markets who occasionally continues the client relationship with integrated direct and online marketing.

I play competitive tennis and help Harry Webber with his think tank, the Institute for Advanced Practices in Advertising.

Branding, product launches and targeted marketing for medium-sized companies, especially in financial services, technology and anything construction or residential.

Making clients look like billion-dollar corporations and then generating the revenue to get them there.

Branding and direct. (I must be crazy.)
Company Description
An entity that combines the design sensibilities of a branding firm with the zeal for revenue of a rather orthodox direct-response firm.

People seem to like the combination, though. Since I gave a presentation to a local group of entrepreneurs in early October, I've been swamped - can't really take on another project until I get some help . . .

Work History
Spent the nineties working first at and then with Maritz Inc., a billion-dollar firm that helps big companies get the most out of their people with programs that include training, communications, incentives and travel. Maritz also has a little-known but very big research division that has been my client since 1993.

In the eighties I was at a variety of ad agencies in St. Louis, MO and one in Kansas City, working mostly as an art director but also as a writer on a variety of accounts in packaged goods, healthcare, technology, home furnishings and financial services.

In the if-you-care department:

I've won some design awards. And before art school, I spent a couple of years at Brown, in Providence.

What Services Can You Offer Adgabber Members?
Advice, opinions, cheerleading - and soon, a business model that might make sense for enterprising creatives in a difficult market. Look for that in the first half of 2009.
What Services Are You Looking For From AdGabber Members?
I am very close to needing some help servicing the business I've picked up in the last month. If I land one more account, I'll be at maximum capacity, and I need time to develop the materials and systems for Phase 2 of the model I'm working on. So you may find me yelling for help in the Art Directors' and Writers' clubs pretty soon.

Please don't hire Jack Goldenberg to work miracles at your agency.

Well, Jack Goldenberg is out of Bristol-Myers after two years of blowing the doors off the numbers for cancer drugs, wound-healing gels and who-knows what else. (See below for the real story.)

Jack, darlin', I figure you'd think it's a good idea if I remind all our Gabber friends why it's imperative we get you back in a big agency pronto. Or leading the creative efforts in-house at a corporation.

And you would be the perfect person to double the size of a small agency - or save that huge accou… Continue

Mary, celebrate your dysfunctions rather than trying to cure them. MAKE SENSE? http://www.adgabber.com/forum/topics/546804:Topic:75426?id=546804%3ATopic%3A75426&page=25#comments

You're very kind, Mary! I hope you weren't disappointed with my personal website. I wanted to "keep it clean," but I fear it's a bit sparse. sigh. I'm always second guessing my personal marketing... probably because I can.

Again, many thanks. I look forward to checking out your site too!

I think you hit it perfectly on the head when you said "they have to have skin in the game". I think I was very lucky and fortuitous to have been able to see the world through my own rose-colored convictions, only blinking when I needed to protect those delicate ideals I had about myself and the world I thought I lived in. POV, especially one derived from actually BEING in the world as-is, was in itself, the most expensive and yet most valuable education I have ever gotten. I wholeheartedly agree with you.

As a matter of fact, I just had a lengthy discussion with one of my daughters about taking some time off from the idea of college and going out into the world and seeing it first hand before she makes her decisions on the direction of her scholastic life, thus giving her “skin in the game” if you will.

Sadly, I spent MORE time in class helping other students develop their project ideas than I did my own….yet time and time again, I came out on top.

Since then, my convictions have dramatically changed and the shock of seeing the things I have witnessed first hand, has settled my response metronome down to a softer, gentler (dare I say - wiser) swing. But that experienced has also sharpened my paradigms on key important ideals I have had for a very long time. In essence, my “gut” reaction to things has been justified and validated, over and over, to the point I’m always counting and relying on it, more than ever.

Most of these students sorely lack that gut…or the will to validate it through personal experience. I soooooo agree with your point in the value of a “well-rounded education”. The problems I see in most of my classes (first hand), is the pin-point direction I see most of the students are taking to get a particular degree. No time to smell the roses through another unrelated class…so to speak. You won’t find a math student taking a philosophy course because the latter is a waste of precious course time. And that bullet-like accuracy with a college degree is rather odd for something in a spatial creative sense like art: written, painted or printed.

As far as the 12 projects I have promised Mr. Webber, he’ll get them eventually (I have 5 done as we speak)…my only problem is that I constantly find myself distracted by the smell of another flower…Right now my flower off choice is film and video. That, and the constant warnings of spec work given away for free from my professors and staff. I told him I would and I’ll keep my promise to him.

Ahhh well… I do love the garden so.

Why is it so important for you to be "discovered"?

(I ask, because I want to know if we have the same reasons)

Well, I am doing my damnedest to be on the court five times a week - though with the snow day today and flying back from a seminar yesterday it'll only be four this week:So what...at least your doing things that you subconsciously NEED to do for your well being. That's more important than you'll EVER know once tomorrow, twice Thursday and then match on Friday. Big key to winning: telling brain to stfu on courtI so get that too...I use my ice skating time to daydream about other things..., let body move on court and hit the ball. After 40 years body really does know how to return serve - doesn't need brain to talk all the way through the stroke or trash-talk the opponents.Sometimes business benefits from a mindset like this as well.

Anyway, I'm wondering - what are you hearing from the design students on the subject of plans after graduation and their job prospects?Yeah, the kids are spooked about looking for jobs and the prospects of doing things that they want to do THEIR WAY. As a student though, I see the passion behind it all...I'm just not seeing anything revolutionary or ground breaking...seems like every student is coasting by just enough to pass a class and NOT pushing the envelope at ALL. That can be from a myriad of reasons...lack of experiences in the world...lower classroom expectations, listless instruction from burned out professors to just lack-o-insight from the students. I haven't seen one thing from a fellow student that has made me think "Why didn't I think of that" yet. I dunno...maybe its because of my warped mind and dented brain?

I'm asking because I was just rereading a column of Harry's from last spring I still owe Harry 12 Full-page print ads I said I would send him for shits and giggles (all at the continual protest of my art professors and staff)...and I will send them when I get them done...I just keep getting sidetracked with film ideas, art projects and helping others with their lackluster projects.
(http://madisonavenew.wordpress.com/2008/04/30/back-to-basics/) as grist for some copy I'm writing, and thought you might have some insight on the subject - particularly given what's happened in the world since last April. Spooked , Vanilla-flavored talent who think its going to be so much easier than they realize. Dreams will be put on hold and convictions will be crushed - I'm sure.

Thank you for that reply...and you're right...you SHOULD play more tennis. Glad to hear things are going "ok" for you. Not sure Obama is going to be the answer to the future problems (might even make things worse than they are already - time will tell)...but hey, I'm already retired and I'm well-taken care of so...the rest of my life is straight butter. I sent an email to Paul and he wrote back in his usual warm way, saying he'd stop by here and say hi to the old SoFlow gang.

...but you're right Mary...you SHOULD get back to playing more tennis...trust me.

My best,

TJ

Why do I feel like you just sold me a set of steak knives that can cut a hammer in two...and yet can still give me paper-thin slices of tomato in your answer to "How is Mary B.?"

*clears throat*
How are you, Mary. YOU?

Are you still keeping it damp, woman...the "nether regions"...as you put it?

yes it is STILL "bleeding" me like you wouldn't believe...almost to "One Guy, One Cup" status. I've been in an educational whirlwind for the last few...Gone from Graphics to Digital Photography to Business Communication, and then right back to Digital Media. I think I'm heading towards shooting commercials and music video's for young, up-and-coming country stars. I met an actual movie/music/producer (who is much like Harry was in the music industry when he was with Motown) who is starting his own studio in Tennessee. Time will tell. Things are golden for me right now and I seem to have developed a "midas" touch with everything I focus my attentions on...I just hope the ride lasts for awhile....I kinda like being the "good" example in art school.

Anyway...how is Mary B. doing?
