J.S. Gilbert

400 Hours to find an Available site name

I have now spent more time this year trying to find some clever, unique name for a new website than I have eating, sleeping or on personal hygiene. Okay, maybe not more time than eating.

So I found myself typing what I thought might be unusual combinations of characters to come up with something cool, albeit non-descriptive for a new site I am going to launch (perhaps posthumously). It seemed as though trying to combine any 2 words from the dictionary to make a new word and then use that as the site name wouldn't work. Not only has it been done, but it would appear a small band of people own said names and own them only for the explicit purpose of selling them to some poor gullible soul.

I'm also guessing that there's someone from Webster's dictionary working on the inside, becuase it would seem that even the sites for words that have recently become part of the English language have been taken too. And if you look at the logs, these sites were created before the words even existed.

Actually it may just be an extension of the old 1,000 monkeys typing on 1,000 typewriters, because it actually seems that any combination of 2 - 5 consonants, followed by a vowel and then 2- 5 more consonants has been taken.

Many of my firends are rather disappointed because they were hoping to get their names as URL's, only to find that it will cost them thousands of dollars to do so.

Now of course I'm referring to the dot com domain names and not the ones ending in .wbg, .ws, .biz or .something else, because nobody will ever bother to remember that its not a dot com. The person or persons that own your same name, but with the dot com after it will no doubt set up shot as an affiliate network and thus your hard earned promotion will wind up down the drain. People looking for you will simply be rerouted to a website featuring Vince and his Sham Wows or Mr. too much black dye in the hair and beard with his Oxywhite or perhaps somebody offering those free 3 day 7 night vacations in the Barbados.

Well, maybe if you have a million dollars to brand the hell out of your .tv or .net site you might get a little something happening, but then if you have that, you can afford to pay the scalpers the measley $30,000 - 3 million to buy back your dot com name.

SO I should have my site up soon. Please remember to visit www.xxrggyzzvwetnngdrk.com soon. I certainly will appreciate it. And if you have any thoughts regarding a better name, you probably should keep it for yourself.

Hi J:

You might try bidding on a decent dot c at one of the auction sites. I bet there are a lot of people, like me, who have so many registered names that the annual renewal expense gets to be burdensome.

Cordially,

Steve

Thanks Steve. Through dumb luck and perseverence, I actually managed to get a couple of names that the vultures might have overlookedor otherwise perhaps simple serendipity bestowed upon me. I luckily was smart enough to gobble up jsgilbert.com and jsgilbert.net

Unfortunately, there is a 23 year old "writer" who is using his initials "J.S. Gilbert", mostly writing bad political and sports pieces who I am afraid people get confused for me. I actually suggested he go back to using his full name or derivatives thereof, since I had been writing under the name "J.S. Gilbert" longer than he had been on the planet, but to no avail. Thank goodness I grabbed the URL before he did.

There's just something I dislike about bidding for a site name, much the way I don't buy sports or concert tickets from scalpers.

If you use a few SEO techniques, like naming a page "J.S.Gilbert.htm" and salting your site with your name, then the other JS will be relegated Google obscurity.

Let us know when you get the site up. And let me know if I can help you in any way.

Cordially,

Steve
