The Bench TVC celebrating Bench's 20th year broke yesterday on national TV.

Someone should shoot whoever it was that thought of adding those dolphins to Richard Gomez' rowing segment. Cheesy is too kind a word to describe it. It was so obviously computer-generated, I am reminded of my dancing baby screen saver.

And why is everything in slow motion? Come to think of it, why are we so fascinated with slow motion? We never did get past our Bionic Man fascination, did we? That part with the 3 guys in skimpy briefs jumping into the lake bordered on - okaaaay, I'm being a prude - pornographic. The slow motion effect simply added to it.

Overall, though, the storyboard concept was cute. Just that the execution overshot the intent of the concept.

I think it speaks of our Filipino mentality. We like everything over-the-top. We either do not understand or refuse to understand that, often, less is more. Not to mention, classier and with more good taste.

You know what my favorite Bench ad is? The one with Richard's daughter, Juliana, rowing. A spin-off of her father's original rowing Bench ad. I liked that rowing TVC of Richard's but I liked his daughter's rowing TVC more.

That one with him horseback riding was just OA, though. Richard as an equestrian? Something does not connect. Maybe, because horseback riding as a sport speaks of royalty, aristocracy and all things upper crust. All things that Richard Gomez is not and could never be, sadly.

The new Bench TVC was really okay. Just that it's a tried-and-tested concept. Does this mean there's really a dearth of creativity in advertising now? Where did all the great copywriters, creative directors and art directors go? To Dubai, I'm sure. In case we have not noticed, all roads for advertising people here now seem to lead to Dubai.

Come to think of it, there is no exciting TVC on TV these days. Why is that?
