Miss South Carolina Sparks Online Cartography Craze

A few days ago we watched this (subtitled!) video for the Miss Teen America pageant, in which Miss South Carolina is asked (by a girl named Aimee Teegarden! Who finds these people and how do beauty pageants get so many of them?) why 1/5 of Americans can't locate the US on a map.

Her response was curious at best, but the point she made was that too few Americans have maps, and we also need to help South Africans and the people in the Iraq.

This on its own is probably not worthy of rantage, but this - inspired by Miss South Carolina's epiphany - kind of is.

Maps for Us is a collection of maps that have been compiled by and for the children of the US. Thus far it includes a map of chromosome 3 in humans, Brazil in tattoo form, a character map, bigfoot sightings, beer excise taxes, a phrenology map, and Fox's 2005 NFL affiliate game coverage map.

Oddly, there isn't a map that shows the US in the context of the rest of the world, which is what her whole weird shpiel was about, unless you count the map of Pangea, where you can kind of make out where the US might be.

This one by far is our favorite.

..."Milli Vanilli was not a disgrace," Fabrice said shortly after Rob's death. "The only disgrace is how Rob died -- all alone, internally destroyed from the rapid rise then sudden fall.

People suck sometimes...

Yeah...I hate how it forced Rob to cash in his chips like he did. He was a striking individual. Mob mentality wins again. It just sucks that there are that many people in the world looking for the next "reason" to let their humanity slip below civil standards. All they had to do was take the grammy back and leave it at that...I only wish I could have been on his shoulder. I mean damn...its only a statue. Guess it just shows you the importance of surrounding yourself with the RIGHT kind of people.

To tell the truth, I really liked the way they owned up to what happened and tried to make light of the whole thing.

Considering mediocrity too often wins the day, and now it's the norm to lip-sync, I really think those guys needlessly took one for the team.

You know, like Butters in South Park.

Ahhh Milli Vanilli.....Have you ever seen VH1's "Behind the Music" episode on Vanilli...amazing story...I felt so badly for those guys...

The most memorable quote from it:

"...then we had to win that god damned grammy"

Re. the link: I cried! That's exactly what my drunk uncles said to me when I sang "My Way" for the title of Miss East Concord!

I'm sure she'll get picked up for a cheesy spoof ad or something. You know, like Milli Vanilli.

Reminds me of Jessica Simpson's "is it fish, or is it chicken" while eating a can of Starkist Tuna...

talk about a downhill money maker.

I think she'd be the PERFECT spokesperson for Rand/ Mcnally inc.

or maybe even Garmin or Tom Tom...can you imagine the areas and places you could go with this as a creative?

I'd have to go to work everyday with Depends on...because I'd probably piss myself from laughter from the ideas that could come from something like this...

At the end, she gets really close to blurting out "...for our children," which is almost the same thing.

She might have saved more face if she just smiled right into the audience and said, "Because we don't give a fuuuck."

She should have keep the same blank look on her face and simply blurted out...

"WORLD PEACE"
