You...Are So Much Better Than You Really Are

We could use a little Scientology right now. After all, according to the church's new commercial, "you are not your name, you're not your job, you're not the clothes you wear or the neighborhood you live in. You're not your fears, your failures or your past."

And there's more. "You are hope. You are imagination. You are the power to change, to create and to grow. You are a spirit that will never die. And no matter how beaten down, you will rise again."

Wouldn't it be nice to cast off the irrelevant, supposedly unimportant, aspects of your life - all that heavy baggage that drags you down - and just start over anew with hope, imagination and "the power to change." The only problem? You can't simply cast those things off because they are part of you and they do define you. They are your history. They are your personality. They are you.

Religion doesn't cure everything. Religion doesn't erase the messy aspects of live. Religion can, of course, be a powerful, supportive force in your life but it's not like getting a makeover.

Maybe that's a pessimistic viewpoint. Maybe it's just realistic. Anyway, take away from this what you will. We will give it points for its uplifting, "you can do it!" qualities though.

After watching that spot, one does feel like one could simply flip a switch and all would be well with the world.

Of course, before you realize it's a Scientology commercial, AdPulp correctly notes it could be a commercial for anything; insurance, shoes, electricity. It just has that "we are human, we are unstoppable" quality to it.

Not an authority by any means, but I actually had to do some research on the various cults and religions in the world, and I think Scientology, for all intents and purposes, is considered a cult by most, even though they call it "The Church of Scientology." (Interestingly the Mormon Church was, and is, considered a cult. More-so prior to the 1980's. This was due to their beliefs that angel Moroni that gave Joseph Smith the Doctrine of Mormon on two gold plates, their admittance that black people were inferior, and plural marriage...which despite Mormon statements, is still being practiced).

The commercial could be a Nike commercial...I was a bit surprised that it was actually for Scientology. They must be hurting for MONEY. As most of us realize, it requires money to move up in the "church."

L. Ron Hubbard (Elron), the founder of the Scientology movement, claimed to be many things: a nuclear physicist from Geo. Washington University, as well as having earned a Doctorate from Sequoia Univ. in California. However, both of these claims have been proven false. In fact, Elron failed Physics.

Religion is defined as:

re·li·gion (rĭ-lĭj'ən)
n.
a. Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as
creator and governor of the universe.
b. A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship.

Scientology originated as Dianetics or a set of ideas and practices regarding the relationship between the spirit, mind and body. Hubbard reoganized the movement in 1952 and declared it a religious church. Dianetics was renamed Scientology church.

Scientology espouses that men's souls, or Thetans, are all gods. Jesus is not God but a Thetan. Thus, Jesus is the same as man, or not a part of God. Which, for Christians, would cause Elron's 'religion' to be classified as a cult. Additionally, for a mere $30K, the Scientologists can save you...although since they don't believe in hell, it's uncertain what you are being saved from...unless it's Tom Cruise?

Scientology: Religion or Cult?
