FEAR Festival

By Amber Dodd
The last week of October is always an exciting time in the city, but this year there’s a little something to look forward to aside from Halloween. From the 26th to the 29th, Louisiana based company Lucid SFX Development, or LSD, in cooperation with several others including the Zeitgeist Multi-Disciplinary Arts Center, Side Effects Software, the Consortium of Genius and the Ashe Cultural Arts Center (serving as FEAR Headquarters) to name just a few, will be taking over several different venues to bring the first ever FEAR (Film, Effects, and Animation Revival) Festival to New Orleans.

LSD is a swiftly expanding company, led by art director and visual effects supervisor Joe Vance, who specializes in the post-production addition of digital effects to film. Their resume includes prosthetics and CGI for the 2007 movie Homeland Security, work on videos for the band Pearl Jam, and numerous commercials, just to scratch the surface. Active participants in the movement to turn New Orleans into Hollywood South, they promise an event to remember with the FEAR Festival. “This was something we had planned on doing from the moment we came to Louisiana.” Mr. Vance says of his company’s big event. “Our philosophy was always that by bringing members of the feature film industry to Louisiana, we would encourage coordination between outside production companies and the local artists we can introduce them to.” With FEAR, patrons will not only be able to witness firsthand how the professionals actually create some of the dazzling CG effects and stunning animations we have come to take for granted in modern cinema, but take part and become inspired to pursue careers in film themselves.

In addition to the screenings of world premier shorts and full-length movies, celebrity guests include Ron Jeremy, visiting his glory upon all participating venues on October 27th, and Jennifer Delora, widely known for her quirky B-movie roles as well as her work to get deaf and mute actors more involved in Hollywood. Several interactive workshops will be held each day for those thinking of pursuing careers in, or just interested in learning a bit more about, special effects, animation, and movie sound. Most of these workshops will be held at the Tulane University School of Architecture Richard Memorial Building, and include among the tutorials music video, 3D, sound design and interactive effects workshops. Jesco Pictures (who worked on the entire Wishmaster movie series) will be showing off their prowess with prosthetics, and Side Effects Software will be demonstrating what their technology is capable of. “It’s about learning and sharing knowledge,” Joe Vance says when speaking of a program called Houdini that his company exclusively uses, and which they will exhibit at the festival. In addition to entertainment, FEAR is a means to spread information about useful tools and software to other production companies to help advance the field of special effects as a whole.

As far as the entertainment factor goes, live demonstrations with mysterious titles such as Pirate Attack! and Live Shoot-Out! will have to be seen to believed. Performances by certain infamous burlesque troupes (the Suicide Girls and the LilithBots) will add a little bit of sexy to the mix. Ever seen something called Suicide Girls in Chocolate? Ever seen it live? And those who wish for a little aural stimulation to accompany all of the eye candy won’t be disappointed either. Also attending and performing will be several musical acts, including DJs Monk and Berkley with an exciting live DJ/VJ demonstration, and of course an interactive performance from local musical mad scientists the Consortium of Genius, the self described “part musical showcase, part sketch comedy, part magic act, and all rock and roll spectacle.”

But FEAR isn’t just about the professionals showing off what they can do. High school students and amateurs (and pros too, of course) are invited to offer up their own relevant works for judgment. The FEAR Youth Organization, headed up by Rachel Guest, will be handling submissions from the high school age group and encouraging younger people to chase their dreams in this field. The cost is $15 for high school students (only $25 for amateurs and professionals), and five dollars from each submission goes toward a film grant for the winner. The culmination of this unique event will take place at the Canal Place Cinema on October 29th, where the top submissions will be screened and awards presented to the winners. Detailed submission information can be found on the festival’s website: www.widowmakerstudios.com/fear.

Often when Los Angeles sends a production company into the state, they bring everything and everyone they think they will need along with them. What Joe Vance and LSD really hope to achieve with the FEAR Festival is to show Los Angeles and the rest of the country that we have it all here already, and to illustrate to outside production companies what the state of Louisiana is capable of contributing to this ever-growing industry. “Some talented Louisiana artists are being overlooked for no reason other than they don’t put themselves out there. We want to encourage them all to come out of the shadows and be seen. Submit to FEAR, and don’t be afraid to be artists!”

You heard the man, so what are you waiting for? Instead of doing the same old thing this year, experience and participate in FEAR for yourself. It should be noted that the entire festival is practically too affordable to pass up – a $25 ticket gets you into all venues for one day, and students can get into all campus events for FREE with their college ID.
