AdGabber

Hey, it is May. During this month we will celebrate the first anniversary of AdGabber. I had wished Mr. Steve reminds us about the actual launch date for our record.

This is not the real reason for posting this topic. However, I noticed that most posted topics yet has had zero or very few replies! The same case is noticeable on blog posts. Is the problem in the subject of the topics/blog posts?

Please, bring here your thoughts as how we can make this site a place of paradise for members and visitors.

Thank you.

no idea why people don't participate. And, sadly, I can't remember the exact date we launched this thing. I'm sure I could find out though.

Hi Abdol:

I've always felt that the most fertile area for serious discussion is in the Groups section, and we've had some lively and helpful conversations at the Creative Director's Group

http://www.adgabber.com/group/creativedirectorsclub

But much more could be done to encourage discussion in those groups, for example by giving the Group leaders more control over the design of each group as well as the individual posts - being able to organize, delete them et cetera.

Thank you for remembering this anniversary!

Your friend, Steve

Abdol--
The secret and answers to your questions are in this blog post: "Why are advertising social networks so dysfunctional?"
http://www.adgabber.com/forum/topic/show?id=546804%3ATopic%3A75426

Check it out carefully 5 times. Add to it. Remember it.

Hall--You mentioned, "I can't remember the exact date we launched this thing."

"This thing"... maybe that way of referring to "your child-Adgabber" PLUS "not even knowing when that child-Adgabber was born", might just, might just, have something to do with several of the problems my above recommended post addresses. You think? ;-)

...Having said that, happy anniversary Steve!

Mr. McNamara, you see that most active members here are ex-Soflowers.
I had asked them about their lack sharing here recently, the reply will surprise you. There were three main problems:-
1- You cannot contact any member here, unless you ask him/her as a friend first. It was not so in Soflow.
2- The feature of TAGS in AdGabber makes it impossible to find certain topic, in case I was busy when it was posted and wished to comment later. Moreover, the new design of AdGabber’s Home page had been changed to view only most recent 5 topics.
3- Nobody blamed us to post any topic that not related to Ad industry, as most members in either places not work only in this field, May be only freelancers in different fields of interests. Despite this fact, 90p/c of the topics waged as excellent and good. The rest were only for Fun.

Although self promotion was not allowed in Soflow, I had broken the rule for one time when I posted a topic announcing the birth of AdGabber.

Here is my 2C, I think, some members had joined with no real intention and forgot their passwords or even the site in whole.

----
Buddy, this subject needs more than one topic or even to bring it every now and then.
I do not blame MR. Steve for not remembering the birthday of this site. If you are in his case, you will do the same. It is not a problem to not remember the birthday of your children (As they have certificates of birth), but it is a big problem to forget the birthday of your wife**

Well I would like to see more comment/opinnion on the language of visual communication (psychology of visual images) in advertising, and how art directors regard it alongside the verbal/intellectual content (such as they need to shoehorn into ads).

...but that is just me.

Philip, psychology of visual images in advertising!?

You see that all peoples working in Ad industry only know the basics of copy & paste.
This resulted in wide spreed of classic ads worldwide.

Bravo Abdol for articulating the obvious holes in the function and purpose of the interaction of members here. I too was a carry over from the soflow era and to be honest I didn't participate there as much as I have participated here.
Part of the dilema I believe is that a lot of people are participating in the website however they are probably taking in information as opposed to being part of the information with posts. That said of course in terms of consumer behaviour it is probably not too far removed from Tv and radio experiences whereby you have a few who entertain/lead the others... As such in order to make this a place of paradise(I do love that wording) we need to have people to step up and display their leadership abilities which will create the path to the Paradise that we all seek....regards, Stephen Coupland

One piece of Soflow functionality that we don't have here is that when somebody started a thread in a group we were part of, an email went out asking for replies.

Here, we have to come looking for forum posts and reply -- then we do get email notifications of further replies.

Now, I do think that functionality exists in the Groups, because in the fall Harry Webber was able to email the IAPIA members with an initial post -- and what an experience that turned out to be, at least for the folks who stayed active over the ensuing several months -- so it may be that a better way to get things going is to start threads within groups, especially if that email functionality spills over to more than just the group leader.

In the meantime, I'll second Abdol's anniversary greetings, Steve, and thank you profusely for starting not only the Gabbers but also Soflow before it. Most important, thanks for being an active moderator, stepping in to keep the discourse professional. Or as professional as we creatives can manage day-to-day . . . ;-) I've made actual friends on both sites, and without them I doubt I'd ever have found myself at dinner in LA this past March with Harry and Angela, for example, or had any other offline -- or at least off-site -- contacts with the folks I've gotten to know here first. So, thanks again!

Hi Mary, it's great to hear that you are actually finding a 3d outlet for interactions that you have commenced here in the internet world. Thankyou for your kind words even though several months have transpired since you posted them. I sincerely do believe that via the internet it is possible to effect change and influence behaviours, which is why i decided to engage in harry webbers forum discussion about the Advanced Practices in advertising.... personally i am based in australia and as such obviously can't meet in person as readily as those abroad, however we can still interact. I do look forward to following threads when I do find time to visit... keep on having fun in life and being involved and thankyou for giving a damn.... regards, stephen coupland

Huummm!

The structure of this forum is quite different from all of the others I visit (non ad related), and I think that makes scanning for interesting topics to contribute to a bit difficult. That said, I have no real solution for the problem. I like different and I am trying to adjust to see if this "different" is good or not.

Personally, I don't have as much time to post as I would like, and some of the threads are outside of my area of knowledge or interest. I suspect others feel the same way. I often lurk to gain knowledge.

Oh, and BTW, congrats, Steve.

Well, let me plug my favorite cause of the moment, then. Things are starting to happen over at IAPIA. Perhaps in keeping with the nature of a think tank, as the summer winds down and the world is heading back to school, we seem to be ramping up.

More is coming.
