I'm working on a new book for McGraw-Hill and would like to speak with people about their strategies for promotion and marketing through YouTube. I'm looking for that next generation of success stories, and up-and-comers too. :). Best to reach me at bschepp@gmail.com, or here. I'm easy to get along with.

Making Money With YouTube is an oxymoron just like Get Website Traffic With Google Ads.

BTW, these two Google ads were displayed in the right column when I wrote this reply. Just sayin'.

I hear you and I can understand why you would say that. But at the same time you'd have to admit that exposure on YouTube has helped build/expand some careers, no? So indirectly, at least, there are many examples of people who have made money thanks to YouTube. Now if only YouTube itself could figure out a way to do the same.

I work for a diverse ambulance company and we have posted some of our PR videos on Youtube and our current commercial from the different companies. We don't have an exact measure on the videos but I know they have really increased traffic on our website and also increase interest in becoming a medic.

I think youtube was once a promotion tool that supported the common interests of like-minded communities. It was quickly adopted for more commercial promotional purposes and used to support viral marketing campaigns. The amBX campaign (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=MtcoKpz45Kg) is one I know of that did this particularly well - Gold CyberLion at Cannes for my former agency - although I don't think it's made Philips much money yet!
I think the commercial world has now permanently constrained the potential of youtube as a marketing channel (clips exemplified by Simon Cowell's gang) and most of the people who have the networks to be able to accelerate virals are suffering from severe over-exposure to these campaigns.
Maybe the group that's doing best out of youtube right now in a commercial sense is anyone with a self-help product to sell that can preview their product in a video clip. Pilates/Yoga instructors with DVDs to sell...youtube is literred with examples.
It seems to me that these days, amongst the vast library of youtube's landscape, one of the sectors that is doing the best at maintaining it's credibility and generating loyal communities is the personal/blogs category. These are regular people who, thanks to the prevalance and convergence of comms devices, are able to post more frequently and with a higher quality. Performance artists, short film-makers etc. I guess they're hanging out for fame...but I agree with Dailey that the objective of making money (at least directly) and the use of youtube to do it are increasinly incongruous.
Having said all that, I'm personally giving it a try at the moment in an attempt to promote my new venture. And trying to do it in a credible way...we'll see.

Thanks Matt. You raise a bunch of good points. I've been speaking to performers and self-help people and some have really made names for themselves through YouTube. Some companies, such as Blendtec, have done the same. It's not easy (what is?) but it's possible.

1) i create viral videos for marketing and if i create a viral game, i make a video presentation on it.

2) did this kind of videos a lot - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iqmt-R0-1sM

3) youtube contest is promising, going to try it soon.

4) taking a video clip and giving voice over in a diff language all together can also be a traffic generator for niche market.
something like this! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXMzrp1OHnk (this is not an actual promotion...but can be)

Maybe not unique but here are some promotional methods i use to generate traffic.

1) Do research on existing youtube videos which are doing well.

2) findout which all blogs has mentioned about it (i have a online software which tracks it, sorry i forgot the name)

3) Optimising my video with relevant keywords in title and description and contact these blogs so they may review on it.

4) stumble it..

5) cross promotion...i have a group of friends who have legitimate accounts, they come and start commenting and a discussion is born among 5/6 people...thats enough for multiple 5 star ratings, favorating the videos and many comments and traffic to take it further.

6) Add em to google verticals...as now google shows my videos too on SERP.

"Indian Street Foods" is one such keyword were i managed No1 position with a youtube video.
but i must admit, i have not did much on it.

7) Integrate the video to facebook.

all the best for your project...
