AdGabber

SURPRISE SHOCK!

"I joined Adgabber to hear other peoples’ opinion on relative topics to our industry. I don't need work, clients, suppliers, or resources. Let’s share some ideas!"

for example:

Are we the only TV viewers and online users who would not like advert-free-content? Not just because we would have no work but because we like to see what the competition is up to?

or to put it another way

Would we pay a bit extra for our cable/broadband to be advertising free?

Apologies if you find the first sentence too provocative.

Why am I here?

Simple...after I get out of school I'm going to do and create a lot of really cool shit and someone with the right sized testicles (or ovaries... Hey...I'm an EO worker) will make a ton of cash from them all, as will I and I'll finally have my "fuck you" money that I can give away to whomever I want to...

I'd ultimately like to make Oprah and all her (insert a large audience of women screaming in pleasure) philanthropy... look like a Scrooge.

First off, it's AdGabber (no r). Second, you are exactly right. Idea should be what it's all about here. The sharing and discussion of what people are working on. What's working and what isn't. In terms of the pay more to get less ads argument, many a study, unortunately, still support the notion people will make the sacrafice of accepting ads to get free content. Of course, now with DVRs they can still "accept" the ads bu just skip over them.

Many people's cable bills are already topping $100 per month., It'll be a big battle to get them to pay more even if they received content with no ads. If you dovetail this with the nirvana of truly addressable advertising achieve through various means not the least of which is getting people to part with the personal info that makes advertising addressable in the first place, I think a more likely scenario. Far less ads that are far more targeted with the medium. It's anybody's guess though.

Considering the fact that my cable bill is larger than my car payment, I think I deserve advertising-free cable already. Now I just record everything I want to watch and fast forward through the ads anyway. I hate watching live TV.

Ideas like Joost are the future. But all this technology lacks the simplicity of the television. Turn it on, change the channel, get beer. Newer social/media hybrid technologies aforce you to, sign up for an account, download software, sit at computer and think about how you could get these cool free shows on your TV via NAP forwarding.

OH YEAH...my idea...(and yes, I realize I'm not going to increase my opportunities by saying this, buuuuuuuuuuuuut...)

Some of you "ad" people are so far out of the "purposeful" ad loop... You fail to "move" people where they can be moved to.

Hence the absolute CRAP that passes for commercials these days.

You make people reach out towards you only to shove you out of the way, in any capacity.

its laughable and revealing.

Take the recent Radioshack commercial where the boyfriend records his entire collection for his girlfriend from analog to digital and surprises her with it when she comes home...There is a split-second moment where the creator of that spot "Got It"...Anyone else see it in there like I did?

I absolutely love to watch well-made, thoughtful, humorous spots...

Lead...

Follow...

or simply get out of the way, already.

Seems like we're getting somewhere from the original thread. Using the scenic route I think you're saying that you wouldn't pay not to receive ads as you take an interest in them, whether that's a like or dislike it’s still an interest.

I would usually not call an ad CRAP because of the subject matter or due to its story telling style or innovation of script. There are other people out there that respond to all types of adverts, even if i find them cheesy, tacky or nauseating. I would step forward and call an ads crap for failing to carry through an idea to it optimal ending. Or bad production of video or audio, animation or editing.

Pulling it kicking and screaming back to the original thread, I would choose to keep watching the ads as it is usually where the most money is spend per second on screen, so therefore is where the most innovation of screen graphics is showcased and were the smaller creative visual experiences can be given a chance to shine. We all remember Sony Bravia.

On the first part of your question, I think people should not be here with the sole purpose of promoting a non-advertising related SexFlashGadget, or whatever. Especially when they invite all 500 members to be their “friend.”

If most of the people who invite you to be their friend really just want to sell you something or waste your time, then pretty soon you’re gonna stay away.

Mr. Hall has a difficult issue in that he doesn‘t want to inhibit free expression, but he also doesn’t want AdGabber to become a haunt for Under-Assistant West Coast Promo types.

If you don't want to get pitched to, then go live in a friggin cave in France. There are as many reasons for someone to be present on Adgabber as there are people on Adgabber

As for most advertising, some is really good and some is really bad and most just is advertising.

There is a ton of crap that has been made by creatives at Publicis, Hal Riney, Crispin Porter and Goodby Silverstein, (Don't mean to single them out) and even more stuff that simply isn't "very good". Nature of the beast. We don't seem to hear much about it.

Kind of like baseball. Great players hit 40 homeruns per year, which means how many actually going out of the park per at bat?

Personally, I find it more offensive to see bad stuff coming from agencies with vast resources than from small agencies with limited means.

But then again, it's all subjective. I might think an ad is great and someone else might think it's lousy and vice a versa. JUst as I might think somebody is a moron and someone else thinks they're not.

Personally, I like seeing ads - good and bad.

I find it extrmely odd that there are people in our industry that produce broadcast and don't own t.v.'s DAMN TRUTH HERE. Of course, most broadcast producers these days have DVR's and just fast forward through commercials and instead watch their commercials on YouTube or from subscription services.

Personally I try to listen to the clients needs and develop advertising that will fit their budgets and work towards their goals. Often it isn't great advertising. (Fancy that) It probably won't win awards, but it helps my clients grow and prosper so that eventually when they get big enough, they can resign my pathetic little butt and hire some big agency that wins awards.

As far as the first sentence being "provocative", I don't find it so. Perhaps a little assumptive and naive.

I only watch TV using TiVo, which gives me control over how much advertising I see. I know that my life-long passion for advertising and my career field make me an atypical audience member, but I sometimes fast-forward through poor 'content' to get to the ads. I have been known to watch the same ad over and over, several times in a row.

A good commercial is a beautiful thing. A story told in :30. The writing, direction, and performances need to be so tight and purposeful. To me, that's compelling television. My current favorites: the current American Express ads (love the ones with Martin Scorcese, the one running with Scorcese, DeGeneres, et al also crack me up.)

So, in a nutshell, no commercial-free TV for me, thank you. I think I'd miss my favorite stuff! :) And how would I know how to use Head On?

I think that there was no reply yet to the original question of: What are we here for? However, I had noticed that most topics/blogposts here has had lack or zero shares yet and wondered, why (?)

The Internet is not another TV set but the place where we can share our thoughts with other global affiliates. Despite of the entire fake, it helps us all expand our knowledge base and human relations.

I will never mind to see some advertisements in different sites, as it is a type of information, even I am not satisfied yet with achievements of this industry.

I don't know, maybe its just that I'm a huge geek or something, but I LIKE ads - on TV, in magazines and online. If I want to watch TV, free of comercials, I can go to the on-demand section and choose something, but really, the beauty of cable is that it is so targeted, first by audience hence 100+ channels, and second by geographic location so I am targeted by products and services accessable to ME.

If I am watching for instance, the VS channel and tune into Holy Sh*#, then in New York, I am gonna see ads for Panagonia Sports and Mountain Creek Resort/Diablo Mountain. These are things that I am glad to know about because I want to go buy a mountain bike and hit some serious off road trails. If you live in New York, and you like action sports, its great to see you are not limited to rock climbing at Chealsea Piers.

And as for magazines, I look seriously at more ads than the articles. Often, the content is repetitive info that you've seen if you have the same interests for more than 2 years. Example - how many times can I pick up a Men's Health, and learn about the proper way to do crunches? I am interested in the ads about the newest golf clubs that help me improve my horrible slice, though.

And don't get me started on online ads. There is a big stink in the news now about Google and its aggregation of data on people. Frankly, who gives a shit? I like what I like, and I'm not trying to hide anything. It's nice to get only targeted messages about the things I like. I like opening an email exchange I've had about a snowboarding trip, and find three or four offers on the side, detailing ski packages to Whistler or Heavenly, or the French Alps. That's what I want to know about. I live in New York for crying out loud, I don't want to see mortgage rate pop up ads, 'cause it just reminds me that I am never gonna be able to afford that $4,000,000 - 3,000 sq ft apt in the Upper West Side that my girlfriend has her eye on.

I love ads, how do you know what is available if its not put out there? Its like you want companies to build a store in the middle of the desert, and hope that you'll stop by one day...
