I am looking for some insight into the Social Media Marketing world. Does anyone have any expertise in this area and would allow me to "pick their brain" or if someone has any articles, books, or seminar recommendations that would be helpful, would you send them my way?
Ben McConnell and Jackie Huba's book Citizen Marketers is probably a great place to start. Easy read, almost a bible of what's going on now. They're a bit blog heady I think, but everyone's got an angle. Anyway, a good primer. Their other book Creating Customer Evangelists is next on my list.
Also, if you haven't discovered MediaPost.com, check it out. A number of good online publications with news and occasional tidbits relevant to social media marketing.
Happy to throw other suggestions your way if you need 'em.
Thanks Chris! I do spent a lot of time on Mediapost.com. And I really appreciate the book recommendations. I just read The New Influencersand it was a good read.
Yup, mediapost is a fave of mine. If you don't subscribe to the emails, worth doing. More info, more clearly laid out.
I think places like AdGabber are becoming among the best sources for learning in this new frontier. And now you've given me a book to look for, so thanks to you!
Hey Wendi, Thanks for starting this thread. I'm working on integrating social networking into PR plans for companies in 2008. I think it's an interesting component that would be a good fit into the 'public' side of public relations. Drop me a line sometime to brainstorm ideas together. Clint
So Wendi -- Haven't seen too many discussion threads take off here, but yours seemed ripe for participation. As this would seem to be a great place for insight, did you get any more responses? I'm interested in same subject, so would love to hear what you're hearing, if you're hearing anything...
I am actually in the process of putting together a brief overview of what I have learned so far about Social Media Marketing. At work we have all taken on these learning projects, mine is Social Media Marketing.
I have gotten a few other responses. A few people have mentioned that they would like to "get together and brainstorm". I think that would be a great idea.
I am still looking for more books to read and I have been slacking in some of my reading, mostly because of holiday preparation.
Sounds great. I'll bring what meager knowledge I have to the party. Tho I'm wondering if we're all reading the same books in a frontier town library. Happy holidays!
I more than play in this space. Heck I teach a course on entrepreneurship, at Boston University, that focuses on creating businesses that utilize the platforms or tools provided by social networks, virtual worlds, etc. I'd be more than happy to talk. Also, Larry Weber has a new book "Marketing to the Social Web" that provides lots of good insight.
I would be happy to chat with you on this, or, you could post a few questions to get us started and we can have a discussion that others can join in/learn from in the social media way!
Though books are good, the best way to learn I think is to do. That means getting your feet wet and consuming social media, as well as producing it. The brain goes into high gear with "aha" experiences once you are actually using the tools as compared to reading about them. Social media is first about the conversations, not the manipulations.
