They are totally different. Dating sites are for, well, dating, hooking up, finding a life partner...or just someone to sleep with that night. Social networking is far more encompassing having to do with far more than dating such as forming business relationships, interacting with like-minded people on topics of similar interest, spreading a worthy cause, monitoring trends and news, spreading news, leveraging trends, spreading a marketing message, monitoring the perception of a brand. I'm only scratching the surface here.

I would say that a dating site is a type of a social network. Other types are linkedin.com for business and career. Facebook for friends.

Facebook could be a dating-site but since you don´t have a nick and its not made to make you meet new people it makes a difference.

ok, guys what you are saying is that the reason of visiting one dating site and social is different.
But technically, both sites provides you with almost the same applications to express yourself - upload your pictures, appload your videos, describe yourself (interests, hobbies etc.)....
In dating sites, except for one night sex, you are looking for a friend too, in the meaning of partner to spen your life with, who is going to share your interests, who will be on the same intellectual level.... In this regard... what is really the difference :) ?

dating sites are specifficaly for dating but social networks cover dating, news, common interests, games, academics, and much more. You go into a dating site for one reason only but into a social network for a million reasons or just no reason at all!

Strange as this may seem, as recently single (after 24 years not) I joined a dating site, and guess what made a whole herd of business contacts, also met some lovely people.

... so the amswer is yes, maybe, depends on how narrowly you define social ! LOL

dating IS social but its just a more narrow social network than facebook for example, like photography networks are social but also narrower..
