Management Consulting Transition

Hello Everyone,

If I could ask for your collective wisdom and advice:

Situation: I am currently working for a large global Management Consulting firm in Toronto, Canada. I am looking for a more of a consumer-centric position that will enable me to learn more about the marketing domain, specifically acquiring competencies in online & direct advertising, brand management, SEM/SEO, and customer & market segmentation/analytics.

My Background:
- 3 years management consulting: largely in IT advisory working on organizational transformations, strategy & business case development, and Program/Project management
- Certified Management Accountant (CMA): completed for business acumen and financial expertise (think similar curriculum to MBA)
- Technical and analytical foundation: math and computer science degree from University of Waterloo (top technical university in Canada)

Complications:
- Acquiring the necessary marketing/advertising domain knowledge
- Positioning my experience as transferable to interactive firms such as R/GA and Tribal DDB (within their Strategy and Planning department seems to be the best fit)

Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated and of high value to me.

Thanks,

- F

I'd advise you to sell yourself by letting these firms know how well you know consumers, what have you done in your job that helps the companies you worked with be friendly and have a good image in the minds of the consumers, and let them know why it is important for you to have this change of pace jobwise and why you would be good working in advertising in the internet area and your experience with internet consumers (this last idea concerning Triball DDB).

Diana, great advice, I will play up the consumer impact portion of my project work, the majority of my work has been shaping IT strategies and building IT competency within organizations by introducing formalized processes, workflow, etc. which is more on the internal efficiency side but has impact on their customer delivery capabilities.

Does anyone have direct experience with someone close to my background entering an agency.
